Finding The Right Kit
For the beginner Gunpla enthusiast, knowing which kits to buy can be difficult. The key is understanding the model grades:
Super Deformed (SD/BB) – These kits are small in stature, cutesy, and “chibi” aesthetic versions of Gundams. This grade is perfect for children who want to start in the hobby or just anyone who wants to give it a try for the first time, and have a nice relaxing build.
Difficulty rating: Easy.
High Grade (HG) – Ready for some real Gundams? This grade has the biggest lineup of Gundams in it, so if you’re looking to build a specific model from your favorite manga or anime, you’ll probably find it here. High Grade kits have two scale sizes 1/144 (13cm) and 1/100 (18cm). They’re the perfect kits for beginners to experienced builders.
Difficulty rating: Medium.
Master Grade (MG) – Now we’re getting serious. These babies can get a bit pricey, but it’s totally worth it when you consider the higher level of detail, inner frame skeleton, mechanics, design, and articulation that comes with it! These kits are for those who are all-in on the hobby and are ready to take it to the next level. Master Grade kits are scaled at 1/100 (18cm).
Difficulty rating: Advanced.
Perfect Grade (PG) – Need that show stopper? Look no further. We’re talking the Rolls-Royce of Gunpla. Coming in at a whopping 1/60 scale and 30cm tall, these kits are sure to impress. Perfect Grade kits are the pinnacle of this hobby and should be taken on by enthusiasts who have a few MGs under their belt. They’re packed with mind-blowing detail and usually come with LED light-up capabilities!
Difficulty rating: Expert.
